Why you Need to Set Working Hours

Set Working Hours

When you first start your own business, one of the biggest perks is that you can make your own hours. No more having to be at work at 9am, and not leaving until after the sun goes down. Now you have the option to start working whenever you want, take breaks whenever you want, and take vacations whenever you want.

Don’t like spending your weekends getting things done? You can run errands in the middle of the weekday when places aren’t so crowded. Not a morning person? No problem. Sleep late and work in the afternoon and evening. It sounds great, right?

It is incredible, but if you aren’t careful, you could end up spending all of your time working – or worse – none at all. That’s why having set hours, even if you change them daily or weekly, can really help.

If you’re really into your business, and want it to succeed (and who wouldn’t?) then there’s a chance you’re going to end up having a problem. You’ll feel like you should always be working. If you don’t have set hours, any time you’re home and are relaxing, you’ll feel like you should be working. I speak from experience! If on the other hand, you have decided that on Monday you’re working from 10am-1pm and 3pm-7pm, once it hits 7pm, not only will you stop working and relax, but you won’t feel bad about relaxing and will be able to have a good time instead of feeling guilty that you should be working.

You’ll also be able to put more effort into your work, since you’re only working certain set hours. Instead of spending time surfing the web, you’ll know that you’re only working a certain amount of hours and will want to get as much done during that time as you can.

This is the biggest problem I had. I always felt like I should be working. The worst part is after a while you will stop working, but you won’t do anything fun since you feel like you should be…so you don’t get anything done, but don’t get to relax and enjoy yourself either.

Setting working hours gives you permission to relax and enjoy yourself, so you’ll be more productive while you’re working, and will be a lot happier overall.

There is another problem that comes with having your own business and working from home as well, especially if most of your work is done online. Your friends and family may not see it as work, and will call you all times of the day, expecting you to drop what you’re doing to talk to them or help them. It’s not on purpose…but since you’re home, and you’re just using a computer, a lot of people think that means you’re free to talk anytime they want. This is another great reason to have set hours. You can tell people that you’re working during these hours, and that you can’t be disturbed during them. Trust me, you’ll get a lot more done, and have a lot less interruptions.

While you can just work when you want without setting yourself working hours, you’ll find that you get more done, and enjoy your free time more when you have set working hours.

If you’re already working from home, how do you make sure you get things done, but still have time to relax? Do you have issues with people thinking you’re always available to talk to them or help them because you’re just “at home on the computer all day”?
